Twenty-five years ago, following in the footsteps of the glorious age of beloved comic books and mythic superheros, mutants became an undeniable reality. They had been there for several decades before that, but it was all rumors and superstition until the nineties. Then one finally stepped forward. Others followed. There were studies. It became fact and the numbers blossomed from there. A handful became half a million across the world as the years passed. Most began to show their powers while they were teens, but it wasn't uncommon for adults to manifest abilities well into their fifties in the early days. Mutants, gifteds, are real.
Ten years ago, under growing persecution against mutants, Summer Academy was founded as an institute for gifted children in need of a place where they could grow and be accepted. Located just north of Seattle, the facilities are a mix of old and new. The founder, Blake Lively, passed away three years ago, but the school continues without him under new management. While its purpose is oddly still a secret in the eyes of most major organizations, it has gained a worldwide reputation in the right circles for what it does. Every year, it accepts almost four hundred students inside its walls, most between the ages of thirteen and eighteen.
