Earlier this evening, my second character was accepted by DC. I was looking around for a place to start her off when I realized that I had no idea how to get her down from the top of Sulace Mountain. While I wouldn’t completely discount a partial lack of inspiration on my part, thinking on it a bit and talking with Nightstalker in the c-box revealed to me the problem. Now, just to clarify, I have no problem with the board or the idea behind it; I like both. The people here are okay and I have yet to find myself wondering exactly where I fit into the site’s social structure.
First, I would like to say that I have OCD. It’s not life-controlling, but it’s enough to make me very linear and organized in some ways. This might be part of the problem. However, what I’ve noticed is that the boards seem to have no real connection to one another. Sulace Mountain, for example, is a single mountain without a range of mountains around it. The Village seems to be nameless, and it strikes me as odd that it would be the only prominent village in a given area - such as the kingdom, which also seems to have no set name. If the site’s set in a specific part of a larger world, that would be understandable; however, it does not seem to me that this is so.
Again, I’m not dissing site. It just seems to me that the boards are very disorganized. I’m having trouble figuring out exactly how to get Adrasteia from one place to another. There doesn’t seem to me to be a set path that leads from one place to another, a main road, any kind of commonly traveled ground - anything of that nature. For Caitlyn, it was no problem; a witch can travel anywhere she likes with little trouble. But barbarians tend to group together in specific settings, and what little travel they do undertake wouldn’t be distant from their home. It’s like a puzzle in my mind with the pieces scattered to different places. It’s difficult for me to draw a line directly from Point A to Point B, essentially drawing my own map of the path Adrasteia would take to get from the mountain top to the slopes; from the slopes to the base; from the base to whatever settlement there might be, including through any specific obstacles (such as a particular forest or around a particular lake); and so on.
Maybe it’s just me. It just seems very confusing and disorganized in my mind. So, after talking with Nightstalker, I came up with an idea of how this might be fixed. Unfortunately, it would be kind of a major fix.
I’ve set up forums before, usually with a name for pretty much everything. Each village or city would have a name, every river and forest would have a name, and there would be a mountain range that would have a certain name; mountains within that range would each have their own names, though only some of them might actually be boards or sub-boards. An example of how I would set up a forum is this:
As you can see from my example, each place you would go to is clearly linked to another place. It would be no trouble for someone new to RPGs to join others on an adventure or for a veteran gamer/writer to start their own adventure/quest. It would be obvious exactly where everything was in relation to everything else.
I’m not saying the site needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. I’m just saying that for me, it’s very difficult to find a decent niche for Adrasteia because I’m having trouble connecting the dots in my mind. Also, for new members, it would be very easy to get acquainted with the board. It’s easier for the human mind to remember things when they’re in a specific order with one thing leading directly to the next; (especially my own); thus, new members would have little trouble picking a starting point and going back or forth to other parts of the world. They’d know exactly which roads to take to get where. A variety of paths to a given location might be slightly more confusing, but not by much if they’re organized in a linear pattern.
